Wynton Marsalis keeps it Old School in Costa Mesa


Trumpter, composer, educator and bandleader Wynton Marsalis has been at the pinnacle of American jazz for more than three decades. (We’ll leave his respected classical career aside for the purposes of this review.) In concert on Sunday at the Segerstrom Concert Hall with his Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra, Marsalis amply demonstrated the traits that have kept him there: effortless technique, deep understanding of multiple jazz genres, laid-back cool and strict adherence to discipline and historical style.

At the beginning of the matinee performance, Marsalis and the rhythm section slipped into Django Reinhart’s “Minor Swing” like they were rehearsing.
