Project Blue launches to capture images of nearby Earth-like planets

Beyond our solar system there are any number of alien suns being orbited by Earth-like planets, and some could even potentially support life.

Despite dazzling artists’ impressions of the distant worlds charted so far, what they look like remains a mystery.

Now, an ambitious effort from astronomers is looking to capture the first images of some of these alien worlds, by pointing the camera at our nearest stellar neighbours, in the Alpha Centauri system, 4.3 light-years away.

While the primary focus is set on the two sun-like stars of the system, future missions could target Proxima b, the potentially habitable world which may have oceans similar to Earth.
