Markets Right Now: US Stocks Move Lower


The latest on developments in global financial markets (all times local):

11:45 a.m.

Stocks are falling on Wall Street as the market gives back a gain from the day before.

Health care and materials stocks fell the most in midday trading Tuesday.

Genetics research company Illumina dropped 24 percent after announcing revenue that was below what analysts were looking for.

Aluminum maker Alcoa slumped 10 percent after reporting results that fell short of forecasts.

Apple rose 1 percent after rival Samsung announced it was discontinuing its Galaxy Note 7 phone.

The Dow Jones industrial average fell 178 points, or 1 percent, to 18,150.

The Standard & Poor’s 500 index lost 22 points, or 1 percent, to 2,141. The Nasdaq composite fell 64 points, or 1.2 percent, to 5,264.

Bond prices fell. The yield on the 10-year Treasury note rose to 1.75 percent.
