Jordan Henderson was about to board the plane that was going to carry England to Ljubljana when Gareth Southgate suddenly called him aside.
The Liverpool midfielder, like the rest of the England squad, knew this was not going to be a ‘normal’ trip after the morning training session at Tottenham’s Enfield base. When Southgate had been working on team shape, Wayne Rooney had found himself on the sidelines.
They were aware travelling to Luton airport that Rooney would not start in Slovenia but nobody at that stage knew who would get the armband. The riddle was solved, though, just before take-off when Southgate beckoned Henderson over.
