COSTA MESA – Like any decent mystery, this one started with a question.
Ned Marr was sitting with friends in 2013, just before a Ducks first-round playoff game against the Red Wings, when his colorful idea crept to life, not unlike the first brush stroke of a masterpiece.
“I’m going to Game 7!” he announced. “I’m pumped! Can you guys paint my head?”
And so was born one of the Ducks’ most recognizable fans ever, Marr not exactly the face of the franchise but more like, buried in all that makeup, the clown face of the franchise.
Slathered typically in orange, black and white paint, Marr himself has become the masterpiece, his brilliantly decorated, mostly bald noggin a fixture on the video boards at Honda Center and a target for other fans’ cell-phone cameras.
His likeness has been used in a commercial by Papa John’s and in promos by Fox Sports West.
He recently was mentioned on the NHL Network and, when Marr phoned into Josh Brewster’s “Duck Calls” radio show and was identified, guest Barry Melrose declared, “Hey, I’ve seen that guy on the internet.”
“I’m very surprised at all the notoriety,” Marr says. “I’m kind of taken aback, honestly. But I love it. I love the Ducks and all the Ducks fans.”
