During the “Great American Eclipse” on Monday, the moon will slip between Earth and the sun, casting a roughly 70-mile-wide shadow that will race across the United States from Oregon to South Carolina. Tens of millions of Americans will get a chance to enjoy — and study — a fleeting but sublime spectacle, the first coast-to-coast total solar eclipse in 99 years.
And, not to miss an opportunity to capitalize on a major event, American businesses are getting in the spirit, from donuts to bananas to biscuits. Here are a few of the deals.
Krispy Kreme is going dark for the eclipse, coating its signature glazed donuts with chocolate in an homage to the complete midday darkness which will happen when the moon covers the sun.
Chiquita is celebrating with the “Banana Sun Cometh,” an ad campaign tying the celestial phenomenon to, yes, bananas. “For two glorious moments before and after the total(-ly overrated) solar eclipse, Chiquita will temporarily turn the sun into a giant banana,” the company says in a video.
Diner-chain Denny’s is offering $4 all-you-can-eat Mooncakes–pancakes shaped like the moon–for one day only.
Cracker Barrel is inviting customers to a “front porch” seat for eclipse viewing, setting up a “Bisclipse” video to show restaurants in the path of the total eclipse.
