Ellenburg knocking on door again in City Amateur golf | Sports

Thomas Ellenburg has put himself in the hunt in the Charleston City Amateur golf tournament. Ellenburg fired a 7-under-par 65 in Friday’s opening round of the three-day tournament being played at Municipal Golf Course.

He is three shots ahead of Paul Van Zutphen and four ahead of Reid Armstrong. Martin Summer, James Millar and George Rasque are tied for fourth at 70.

Ellenburg, who finished second in his first appearance in the tournament in 2015 and tied for second last year, made two birdies and a bogey on the front nine. He blistered the back nine with a 6-under 30 that included birdies at 10, 12, 13, 15, 16 and 17.

Van Zutphen also had two birdies and a bogey on the front nine. He birdied 10 and bogeyed 11 to start the back nine. An eagle on the par-5 15th and birdie on the par-4 17th moved him up the leaderboard.

The tournament, which continues through Sunday, will be flighted after the second round. Saturday’s tee times begin at 7:30 a.m. and continue until 1 p.m.
