BOONSBORO — Contemporary romance author Donna Kauffman enjoyed writing as a child, but she didn’t establish it as a career goal.
“I kind of fell into it when I was stuck at home pregnant with my first child in my “fourth trimester.” Do the math,” she said. “It was August and I couldn’t work at that point. I was sent home to have my child and my child was not coming.”
She started writing down some ideas she had “mostly to keep from going insane,” Kauffman said during a phone interview from her home in the Blue Ridge Mountains of southern Virginia.
She tucked the work away for a while, until shortly thereafter, she found herself once again in her “10th month” of pregnancy.
“It was a very cold winter. I was looking for a toy I had dropped and found the legal pad,” she said. “I thought, ‘Oh boy, that’s kind of embarrassing. But I started reading it and thought, ‘You know, it really isn’t bad.’”
Today, Kauffman is the USA Today’s bestselling author of the Bachelors of Blueberry Cove series. She has written around 50 full-length novels and 20 novellas and short stories. Her books have received rave accolades in Kirkus Reviews, Library Journal, Entertainment Weekly and Cosmopolitan.
She will be among the authors at the 22nd anniversary celebration of Turn the Page Bookstore in Boonsboro from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, July 22. The signing will feature best-selling author of more than 213 romance novels Nora Roberts, whose husband Bruce Wilder owns the store, as well as K. Bromberg, Audrey Carlan, R.C. Ryan, Jill Shalvis, Jacquelyn Vincenta and local author S.T. Heller.
