Almost a week after Hurricane Matthew tore through Haiti as a Category 4 behemoth, aid officials were still struggling on Monday to simply reach and assess the hardest-hit corners of the country.
Several communities along Haiti’s southwestern peninsula remained accessible only by helicopter Monday, leaving thousands of storm victims without power, food, water and medical assistance. Marjorie Jasmin of the International Federation of the Red Cross in Haiti said they have started receiving aid shipments from Panama, but they can’t yet deliver them where they’re needed most.
